The history of the Gwimyeon 귀면 (guardian mask or dokkaebi mask) is as long as the history of spiritual beliefs in Korea. This particular design was created by edc8ang, inspired by traditional Gwimyeon imagery found in Buddhist temples of the Joseon Dynasty.
The mask stares sharply to the right, left, and straight ahead, as if vigilantly confronting and warding off evil. In traditional Korean belief, “evil” refers to misfortune, bad luck, malevolent spirits, and other negative forces.
