Hunminjeongeum, literally meaning “The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People,” is the original name of Hangul. King Sejong created it in 1443 and promulgated it in 1446. Composed of 28 letters designed for easy learning and writing, it embodies the principles underlying Korean phonetics and script. It marks the origin of the modern Korean alphabet.
